Communities

By founder: Steve Freng

Tri State Area Bio-ag Coalition, TSABC, is the voice for Natures' Way Farms, a group of non-conventional, natural, biodynamic and organic farmers and gardeners in the tri state area of Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin, concentrating on producing high quality food for the health conscious public.  Promoting local Naturally grown food through CSA and developing a network of Natures' Way Farms.  An innovative take on the old theme, "I'd love to change the world and make it a better place for everyone".  We have begun, and are strategically concentrating initial operations in a local scope, with intentional growth toward exponential global expansion over the next one to two decades.

A vision of the TSABC is to spread and encourage new global standards of stewardship for all natural resources on earth. Unifying associations, developing networks of totally sustainable farms and common ethics in agriculture stewardship though community based education, developing intentional sustainable communities. Our grand mission: Transform the existing marginally-healthy food system with a nutrition revolution to affect developing a unified global association of community supported agriculture. Included: an educational extension program for kids and families, fostering all natural biodynamic gardening principles and methods of growing, plant biology and conservation. Focusing on youth interaction and family participation in basic and advanced biology, reducing our environmental impact, conservation and nature projects/programs on the local level.

Our Plan
Not to be armchair or desk-jockey environmentalists.
Not to talk and vacillate on pet projects or political projects solely targeted at securing grants and foundation support to support a few doing the talking.   We welcome any amount of financial support with great appreciation and welcome, appreciate and need dedicated volunteer support as well.  Our plans and goals are set on developing a unified network of Farms, Gardens, Community Supported Ag networks in and around communities to localize food production cutting harvest to table time during season, as well as eliminating transportation costs to bring you old food, that is picked under-ripe (not at peak ripeness for nutritional value) for transporting and handling.

Our plan is of mutual benefit for everyone in and around your community.  The farmers, gardeners, community members (like you) who choose to eat healthy fresh locally grown food (harvested hours before), your children, other local children, your grandchildren and their great-grandchildren, local businesses, your local economy, the community in general, all are just a few in your community benefiting from our plan.  Our plan will have an immediate and positive impact on the environment by; reducing pollution, reduction in solid waste generation resulting in reduced landfill loading, ground water and soil contamination, for starters,   General public health will increase proportionately as the general public awareness and participation in our nutrition revolution grows and sustains communities over time.  The pharmaceutical companies, hospitals and medical facilities will all have a lesser load and burden to bear due to improved public health.  Wouldn't you think a dramatic increase in the general public health should produce a major reduction in health insurance rates and medical costs?  ..., We'll see.

Ultimately the general public in participating communities will enjoy higher levels of nutrition, health and quality of life without negatively impacting our environment.  Instead of damaging, polluting and destroying our vital resources - sustainable nurturing and enrichment of earth and Your environment is vital in our achievable plan.

A Win Win Plan.  A win for earth and civilization now, a needed win for the future.

TSABC is more than a grassroots membership organization made up of farmers.  Our primary focus is with rural and urban residents working together to:

  • secure a locally grown healthy fresh food supply, cutting the dependency on petroleum to ship you old food
  • preserve our precious soil, vital waters and wildlife
  • develop and expand our education extension program through a network of members, like you
  • transition small conventional and organic farms to Natures' Way Farms
  • organize communities for immediate realizable major benefits to communities and our environment
  • hold corporations and governments accountable for Our Environment!  It's YOUR RIGHT, YOUR EARTH
  • and create a new sustainable food and localized agricultural production/ distribution network

Our work is currently concentrated in the following three areas:

Our History
TSABC
Founded in 2002, my nearly revolutionary business plan, after development, began to change regularly.  Early in 2005 came the biggest change, with plans to develop a regional CSA network expanding beyond the traditional CSA models.  Also Included in the new plan, to develop a network education program specifically for kids and families.  Keeping these base features, as plans were modified slightly,  and after several plans and guidelines to pilot and steer TSABC, the result is a simple yet dynamic two step working plan designed to develop a nutritional food network, throughout rural and urban North America.  Most recently, (recently altering our projected schedule) plans are being developed for joining with chapters around the globe.  A significant improvement in the level of  public general health and quality of life in and around communities should be realized in the first months of participation in the nutrition revolution.

It began in formal education and self-education then engaging in many lengthy in-depth discussions with experts in their respective fields of; agronomy, health care, nutrition and natural resource management.  I realized after attending land stewardship seminars and land use conferences, organic conferences and research symposiums, (they all were sounding like the teacher on "Charlie Brown", but worse, yes they were a little educational but plagued with and driven by Hype and profits, PERIOD!  We all know what it is - we need to change the way we make it ) I've begun focusing on and reworking old plans and ideas, realizing finding a miracle cure (plan) was slim.  Instead of trying to reinvent the wheel, further development and modification of existing plans seemed practical.  Study and review of old existing programs and plans, drawing on old inspirations from Steiner.  Employing Steiner-like techniques of thought, I was observing nature, looking carefully, smelling, touching, feeling, tasting, sensing and seeking natures' way toward a balance. Not only balancing this farm but rebalancing earths ecosystem, or at least help it along responsibly

The Vision
A 40 year old vision, of world peace and cooperation, nations unified in environmental conservation & preservation. Images of starvation ravaged regions of the world, war, growing pollution problems, public health and medical system problems, civil and political issues of the time (seen in pre-adolescence), inspired the vision.  Two score years (40 years) later, I still see the same ugly images of starvation, war, pollution, nutrition and health issues.

The old vision has taken on a different light, with similar theme and composition, focused on localizing fresh food networks, globally, establishing agricultural standards for public nutrition and health, and special emphasis on environmental preservation and conservation practices.

Growing up on a dairy farm near the west coast of Wisconsin; and Rosa with her extensive background in West Coast fruit and vegetable farming; plus truck farming together and running a CSA for 13 years;  provided us with experience to build on.

On a foundation of experience - our vision and plan grew.  A simple two phase plan.
Phase One: The development of Natures' Way Farms as the guide for localized networks of farms is the initial phase in our plan.  Work on establishing a network of associate farms was implemented.  The NWF concept is intended as a model farm, to serve as a guide to help farmers move toward sustainable farming methods.  The task of managing a farm network on a global scale obviously would become overwhelming and riddled with political challenges....   However, the other and most crucial phase occurs simultaneously with this initial farm development phase.
Phase Two Joining and the coming together of organizations.  Joining together on common environmental and health interests and re-directing efforts as a unified group.   Response to urban sprawl, commuter smart growth is necessary as well as the development of farmland reserves. Joined together, united in cause, rural and urban citizens globally will affect and dramatically and dynamically impact land stewardship and conservation practices.

Our Future
There is much work to be done. Watching grassroots organizations stagnate, lose focus , or become tainted by big profits, gave inspiration to develop this coalition.  The coalition was developed to bring new life back into already established larger developed grassroots and above ground organizations, including smaller regional groups.  Joining organizations in an unrestricting unified affiliation by focusing on large common environmental, nutritional and health issues.  Uniting individuals, local and national organizations, at all levels simultaneously, quickly and efficiently commuting information directing efforts to effect changes in environmental, agricultural, nutrition and health, globally.

Short range plans,  in the next five years include:

  • develop a regional food system in the Tri-State area that provides stability for sustainable farms and offers consumers wide choices of fresh naturally grown wholesome food.
  • develop a network of Natures' Way Farms around communities and within communities to bring about immediate beneficial changes for the environment, concentrating efforts in the crop and livestock industries and reinvesting in local land conservation to promote sustainable communities regionally and globally.
  • acquire support and funding for education and research centers, long term land leases and land grants
  • and develop outreach programs supporting communities supporting community supported agriculture.  :)
